Nature wins the Prince of Asturias Award

Nature Publishing Group (NPG) feels very honored to have had its journal, Nature, chosen for the prestigious Prince of Asturias Award set up by His Royal Highness the Prince of Asturias, heir to the Spanish throne.

The Prince of Asturias Award is the best known cultural prize in the Spanish-speaking community.  The awards are presented to individuals, groups or institutions whose creative or investigative work makes an outstanding contribution to universal culture in the scientific, technical, cultural, social or humanistic fields.  Nature shares the 2007 Award for Communications and Humanities with the journal, Science

“This is an amazing honor which has taken us by complete surprise. There is no doubt that it recognizes Nature’s dual role in communicating significant scientific topics and social issues to a diverse readership. But above all, it reflects the value and impact of scientific research per se, within culture today”, declared Dr. Philip Campbell, Editor-in-Chief of Nature upon receiving news of the award.

Winning this award coincides with the launch this week of NPG Iberoamerica, a new company dedicated to publishing in Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking countries, particularly in the field of medical research.

“We are honored to receive this award” said Dr. Annette Thomas, Managing Director of NPG.  “Tomorrow, I will be in Madrid for the launch of NPG Iberoamerica and Nature winning this award could not have come at a better time. We are looking forward to working with the Spanish-speaking scientific community not only in Spain, but also in Latin America, under the leadership of Lucía Ferreiros who was recently appointed as Director of NPG Iberoamerica”.

Lucia Ferreiros added:  “When I joined NPG, I always knew that I would form part of one of the most prestigious organizations in the scientific world. My colleagues and I are extremely proud and happy to learn that Nature has won this distinguished award on the same day that we open our office in Madrid."
